“Contemporary.” “Accurate.” “Distinct.” Scholars are already calling the International Standard Version (ISV 2.0) “the King James Bible for our time.”
Now, timed to coincide with the 400th anniversary of publication of the venerable Authorized (King James) Version on May 5, 1611, the ISV has been released in a variety of popular ebook formats, including editions readable on the ® ,® the Barnes and Noble® Nook,® mobi pocket readers, and other popular formats.
“Scheduled for release soon are iPhone and iPad editions,” says Dr. William Welty, Director of the ISV Foundation. “The ISV is not a revision, but an entirely new translation from the original languages—the first time this has been done in decades,” Welty continued. “And it’s been developed with a critical eye toward the computer age. As the first translation completely developed for a computer-literate generation, readers will have the confidence they’re reading the latest edition scholarship can make available.”
Why a New English Translation Now?
“A new English Bible was deemed necessary for a number of reasons,” Dr. Welty explained. “One very important reason for developing the ISV was for mission work. Every English Bible translation without exception charges royalty fees for missionary printing, such as evangelistic crusades and the like. Ten or fifteen cents per New Testament adds up, and when your organization can barely cover the cost of the paper, you can really use a royalty-free printing contract. The ISV doesn’t charge royalties for copies that are given away by the mission groups.”
The second reason for developing the ISV has to do with improved textual evidence. “The ISV is the first and only translation to feature a translation directly from the Great Isaiah Scroll instead of the Masoretic text,” Dr. Welty remarked. “This is absolutely unique.”
A third reason for developing the ISV concerns the changes in language every generation. “The English language is constantly changing and every generation sees new means of expression,” Dr. Welty explained. “By issuing release and build numbers like finely crafted software, the reader knows the text of the ISV is up to date.” The current release and build number of the Holy Bible International Standard Version is Release 2.0, Build 2011.05.01.
History of the ISV
Started in 1996 from the roots of a non-profit organization in California, the original goal was to produce a modern-language version of the Hebrew Old Testament. The project grew to comprise both Old and New Testaments and used renowned scholars from around the world to translate the original ancient Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic texts. A list of the contributing scholars and their qualifications can be found at http//isv.org/about_us/scholars.htm.
The ISV has proved to be especially sensitive to the latest scholarship available from the Dead Sea Scrolls; Dr. Peter Flint, one of the foremost authorities in world on the Qumran discoveries, was retained to make a fresh translation of the Great Isaiah Scroll for the ISV’s book of Isaiah.
Hundreds of footnotes documenting differences between the text of the Great Isaiah Scroll and the traditional Masoretic Text of the book of Isaiah form a textual apparatus that is unique to the ISV. “There is nothing like it in any translation of the Bible in any language, anywhere,” Dr. Welty explained.
Future ISV Projects
Future projects from the ISV Foundation will include Bible-related computer software, critical commentaries, the Apocrypha, and a network based on biblical texts located in different countries.

It's the best version of the Bible I have ever read. So many times you have to stop and think about what you read because the English is so terrible. This version was developed by people with the understanding of each language the original documents were written in. It is still a work in progress, so there is no hard copy as yet. Have you ever read a book and can't wait until you reach the next page, your hand and fingers are just ready to turn the page? I laugh at myself here, because this Bible version makes me feel as if I'm reading a paper book and I'm reaching up to the top right hand corner of my Kindle to turn the page, forgetting that the Kindle has to be swiped to get to the next page. Love being able to mark it and put notes on it. Anyone who wants a true version of the Bible from the original language (one without denominational interpretations), will love this version of the Bible. Love it on my Kindle, but can't wait until they have a hard copy also.Product details

The Holy Bible International Standard Version edition by The ISV Foundation Committee on Translation Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
The wording is awesome easy to understand and in the kindle can highlight and look at words for better understanding. God is still speaking this helps to hear Him better. Highly recommend this.
I find this translation very readable, and it is fun to use it in parallel with the King James, New King James, and/or New International Version to get a more comprehensive understanding of the scriptures.
Finally a great modern English translation that is meticulously faithful to the meaning of the Greek and Hebrew. This edition brings the words of Jesus alive as He spoke them. As I understand, this version has been many years in the making. Previous hard to understand verses are clear in meaning. I highly recommend this version.
I like it. I would like it more if the notes had more substance. However, at least I can go to the chapters and easily find the verse. I was having trouble with another Bible I had downloaded. I just hope this one continues to work as the other one only takes me to the books and I have to go through page by page to find the chapter and verse. This one works as intended! It does translate a few things slightly different than I'm used to, but sometimes it makes more sense.
This translation has some good reading in the Old Testament, but I'm not that enthusiastic about the New Testament.
I like the use of the Septuagint and Masoretic Text along with found Dead Sea Scrolls for the Old Testament.
However, the New Testament seems highly redacted. Perhaps, there was too much reliance on Nestle Aland and Critical Text.
In the case of the New Testament, I still prefer the King James - New King James.
It may be that this work in progress will change and get better. If I understand correctly, this is still a work in progress.
*Just and aside I have the [Free] e-Sword software installed on my computer and have downloaded the ISV. In that program, one can do a quick compare of Scripture versions. A handy way to check this out before purchasing it for an e-reader or mobile device.
I find I really like this version. It's very readable without all the old English words you find in the King James Version. I'm pleased to see the Dead Sea Scroll manuscripts being incorporated where appropriate as that gives information that was previously unavailable to most of us.
The version of this Bible is pretty easy to get around in. While it doesn't allow for going directly to a specific text, it DOES allow you to go to a specific chapter, which is usually close enough. And it is easy to see footnotes and then go back to where you were. There is a lot of information about what texts were used to translate from and the specific guidelines used when translating.
I bought a kindle--and this ISV--as a small, portable reference. The ISV is great, however, this application is virtually useless if you intend to navigate from one reference to another FIrst, Bible readers locate by book/chapter/verse. This "thing" is based on page numbers, which vary from Bible to Bible. There is no provision for typing in the book/chapter/verse for which you are searching. You have to use a sliding bar to locate the book then, select the page from a display of postage stamp sized "thumbnail" pages which are unreadable (small print) by the human eye. Once you grope your way to a particular verse, there is no display of the chapter in which you are reading--or the page number.
If you simply want to simply read the Bible from cover to cover (including reams of introductions and history) this may satisfy your needs. If, however, you need to bounce between various books (checking referenced scriptures) you will be dismayed. I hope and pray that I have received a first generation copy of this Bible and that the current clumsiness will be "polished" out. Friends of mine have the ISV on various devices, which are easily navigated. As of this date, I cannot recommend this ISV for use on a reader.
