The Groom, the Bride and the Best Man;
Wow, now I'm not one for short stories usually but I loved it.
Fast paced and very sexy. Loved Scott as a character and despite it being a very quick read James managed to capture all the emotions from passion....angst....and I was left wanting more for sure.
That's a sign of a good...no, a great writer, always wanting more and I do!
David Undone;
A novelette by James and whilst the theme firmly remains in the second chances category it still has an individual spin on the tale, that only James seems to be able to master with his inimitable skill and craftsmanship.
So meet David...going off alone on his travels after it seems a particularly difficult and messy breakup. Landing in a very beautiful Portugal alone when he should be part of a couple, we find this the start of David's very own journey of self discovery.
After settling in he meets Manuel (sigh), an innocent meeting that sees Manuel dropping off some supplies to David and here begins a tentative friendship of sorts. Manuel struggling with his English and David offering to tutor him we find the boundaries of help, friendship and more being crossed confusing David and blurring lines.
The characters that James brings us with each separate book all have very individual qualities....here David, perhaps a little selfish, has things to learn about love and happiness and Manuel a big bear of a man with a huge heart definitely has things to teach him. It is here where we see a shift and I particularly enjoyed seeing the growth in Davids character and was willing him to find that happiness that you know is there somewhere.
A small novel with a huge heart and the skill in this is making it feel like a much bigger novel and it really did feel like that to me....it was descriptive and very endearing , the way the country was portrayed and described I felt as though I was actually there...I could see the scenery....feel the beauty and smell the fresh air....it took me on a journey of sorts....and simply put this book was just....more in every way!
James writing is exquisite and I crave for more, it's writing at it's finest and let me just point out that this is some of the best characterisation I have encountered, and the delivery of a character with language barriers is difficult but here is done with ease.
So don't be put off by the word count...take a chance on this story...live the life in Portugal just for a short time and learn the lesson that James' wants us to....
So thank you James...I am humbled each time I read your words and in this book I found all that i needed and in Manuel there is no doubt I have found my new book boyfriend, he was just the most amazing character, I think of him and smile gently.
Jason's Fall;
Before i start i must point out that James Lee Hard is a favourite author of mine but i will admit to being worried about reading this book simply because i have never ever read a Paranormal book...it is simply not something that was a specific interest of mine...until last night that is.
Jason has been having dreams...somewhat confusing but erotic dreams...he has never questioned his sexuality...until now...and that's because the star of his dreams is a man.
A very confusing journey now begins for Jason especially after 'meeting' the star of his dreams and having quite simply one of the most erotic encounters i have ever read.
Here begins Jason's journey of self discovery...he struggled to understand what happened with each encounter with the powerful and stunning man and as the tale progressed you could begin to see and really feel the awakening of Jason and his desires.
'The lust grew deep inside me, freed me from my control'
As the story unfolded we came to understand as the reader whom this other man was...'A demon' wrapped in a stunning package and we got to see a little behind this entity to really wet our appetite and to keep us interested in where this journey will take us beyond this book.
A thoroughly enjoyable read for me and as an avid reader of his other work i can clearly see the development of James's writing with each book written and for me this was his best work to date.
Eloquent and enthralling but also raw and gritty where it needed to be...a contradiction you may think...certainly not.
I am extremely excited to see what happens to Jason and his 'demon' in the follow up to Jason's Fall...and if like me you simply don't do paranormal, still give this book a chance because i promise you will not be disappointed in the least, and like me you may be a convert.
In summary a simply stunning piece of work and in the words of Jason on his voyage of discovery...
'I was beginning to think this was the real me, or at least the new me'.
The Nephilim's Calling;
The eagerly anticipated second instalment in The Rift series arrived on my kindle and within minutes I was once again engrossed in this exciting tale about Jason, Blaine and the new addition of the Nephilim.
We start this book meeting the mysterious master after Blaine has been summoned and we get a little idea of their focus and intent before we flip back to meet Jason once again.
Jason throughout the majority of this book remains confused by his feelings, his sexuality and his bodies reaction to other men both in this world and another it seems.He even goes so far as to go on a date with a woman to essentially prove that this may just be a phase.
' I would not allow that unwelcome lust to take a hold again'
When that failed it is here we see the slow realisation that he is in fact gay
' Maybe I had been lying to myself and was now facing the truth'
As this book progresses we see more of Blaine ' the demon' and the Nephilim both it seems working against the other but both strangely attracted to this earthling but we are still in the dark as to Blaine's true intentions aren't we?
In summary another beautifully written instalment by Mr James Lee Hard, written in such a way that I felt I was living within the book, descriptive and enticing, erotic and sexy, in fact it shows true talent to make a shorter story feel so much longer than it is, and this is I think mainly due to the quality of James writing which just keeps on getting better and better and better.
Master's Revenge;
The finale is here; Master's Revenge is the final book in the Rift Trilogy and another eagerly anticipated release that did not disappoint in any way.
Here we find Jason still struggling with his feelings, although not about his sexuality as he seems to have made peace with that over the course of these books, but more about his growing feelings and confusion about Blaine and now Gabriel.
This instalment is action packed from beginning through to the end, Blaine trying to save Jason, Jason and the Nephilim trying to find a way to defeat the demons and all of them finding out who Jason really is.
There is everything in this book, lots of drama with fighting and magical weapons, lots of emotion, and of course some hot and erotic scenes but, I will not say more about those and spoil it for everyone.
The aspect that surprised me the most I guess was the actual emotion that I felt whilst reading Master's Revenge, I had never read paranormal prior to this series and given the whole subject and theme of the book, I was not expecting that at all. I was enthralled and amazed and then I had a complete OMG James you did not just do that moment, and I was left completely gutted and emotionally fraught.
I should have trusted Mr James Lee Hard more though because he did not let me down and the ending was perfect for the story and for me, the reader.
So in summary, the trilogy was phenomenal, the writing exquisite, and I cannot impress enough on how much each book just gets better and better, James has continued to learn and grow in his craft and boy does it show in his more recent works, whilst for me still keeping his trademark stamp of writing with honesty and sensitivity.
Thank you for whisking me away to far away lands to fight far away battles if but for a few hours.
