This sequel concerns a new generation of young women who are the daughters of prominent characters from the original story. As they come of age, Pearl Darcy, Martha Wickham and Bess Collins must resolve the same daunting question that tested their own mothers and grandmothers before them. How does a young woman go forward and achieve a satisfactory life in a man's world?
Martha Wickham is the youngest daughter of Lydia and George Wickham. The story begins as young Martha is married off to a wealthy but much older widower in an arrangement financially advantageous to her insolvent parents. Pearl Darcy is the youngest child of Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam Darcy. She is deeply distressed by the marriage of her cousin Martha to a much older man. Intelligent, kindhearted and unspoiled, Pearl prefers life in the countryside. She has been brought up to value a person's character above all other attributes and has great admiration for the heroic blacksmith of Lambton Village, Miles Fulton. Bess Collins is the daughter of Charlotte Lucas Collins and the country vicar, Mr. Collins. With both of her parents now deceased, Bess has been required to support herself and is comfortably employed as the ladies companion to a dowager duchess. Bess is educated, reliable, responsible and sensible. Her life however, is isolated and offers few opportunities at finding love.
The lives of all three ladies become intertwined. They help one another through personal crises. In so doing, all three women learn that the path to abiding love is a journey involving trust, determination, passion, patience and risk. With a new generation comes a more intense expression of desire and passion.

The Next Generation A Sequel to Pride and Prejudice edition by Amethyst Creek Romance eBooks

What version of Pride and Prejudice was this based off of? Surely not Jane Austen.
From the Prolouge it was obvious the book would have issues. Not one, but two of the Wickham's daughters married to Peers? Especially nonsensical considering that it was revealed that Wickham went into trade, and was poor to boot. Yet, despite being poor, and of a working class family, Martha always had a ladies' maid? Even the Bennett sisters had to share the ladies's maid in the original.
Then there are the Collinses. Mr. Collins was 25 in Pride and Prejudice, which if he had lived would have made him 50. His family was genteel, he was the heir to Longbourne, had a college education, yet he had a younger brother, in service? His younger brother who had been Butler for more than 30 years? We are expected to believe that he was a butler as a teenager? The Collinses son was somehow 28, yet Charlotte was expecting at the time of the Darcy's marriage, which was 25 years prior according to this story. Further, why does Bess Collins not have a connection or knowledge of the Bennett sister's families? With her father and now brother heir to Longbourne, and her mother's relationship with Elizabeth and the Darcy's family through the de Bourgs at Rosings, it all makes no sense.
And the Darcy's being open minded enough to let their daughter marry a bastard born blacksmith? I guess "the shades of Pemberley were thus polluted."
Other small things. Empire waisted dresses were out of fashion during this time. Great Uncle Gardiner was in trade not an attorney. Uncle Phillips was the attorney, and this is not even a gentleman's profession as would be allowed to the heir of Pemberley or even a younger son had the Darcy's more children. The use of first names between unmarried, opposite sex individuals not of the same social class? No no no. Bess and Pearl making out with men they weren't engaged to? No no no.
The story also dragged in several places and I found myself skimming and skipping large chunks of the story. I didn't see much chatacter development. I felt no chemistry between the two couples.
Even if you are a die-hard JAFF fan like myself, skip this one and save your time and money.

The Next Generation A Sequel to Pride and Prejudice edition by Amethyst Creek Romance eBooks Reviews

It held my interest& I enjoyed the different characters. & the roles they played. I hope this author writes more books
Thoroughly enjoyed the story. Kept your interest from the beginning. And very believable treatment of the descendants from Pride & Prejudice. If you like Romance novels you will love this.
This was a very good read. I have loved Pride and Prejudice since I was a little girl, My daughter has the same feeling. I did love this story but wish there had been 3 or 5 books before this one was written. I just love to find any book that has to do with Pride.

This book held my interest from the very first page. The plot was good and the characters were believable. What I enjoyed the most was the fact that the author made the women more modern than their parents, which is realistic. The author added some spice to her story which made both the males and females more alive. I would like to read more from this author. In fact, I wish she would write a book about Lydia and Wickham and how they fared after their marriage.
I really enjoyed this and in spite of believing that I have read just about all the classics, I did not even know this book existed. It's really a pleasure to read these classics and I would highly recommend reading it if you have read books of similar genre!
I enjoyed this as a light read, but the characters from Pride and Prejudice seemed nominal only. Lydia Wickham, in particular, seemed inconsistently portrayed - first as an expedient, unfeeling parent, then as a remorseful one. The transition between the two was fleeting. Darcy and Lizzy did not seem right as such peripheral characters. That said, the book was very enjoyable and would probably have stood quite well on its own without the P and P framework.
The information put forth in the Prologue to this novel raised my hackles. How could this be? What author could possibly develop a novel from events which seemed so wrong?
This novel is a fairly good read, but it only resembles Pride and Prejudice in the names of some of the characters.
Given the strict moral standards of the day, and the way gentlewomen were taught and protected, the ending was even less believable.
I'm sorry I wasted my money.
